History

Below is a brief history of York IA.

1968 - The first IA meeting held in York took place this year. Previously members had attended meetings in Leeds, but by now it was judged the 32 members from the York area were now able to look after themselves. Mr Tom Matheson chaired the first meeting in York County Hospital.

1977 - By this time membership has grown to eighty two and York was now recognized as a division in its own right.

1987 - After almost 20 years in the role Joyce Gallon, York IA's first Secretary retires from the position and moves to Wales.

1993 - Tom Matheson, York IA's first President retires.

1994 - Following on from the Charities Act of 1992 York IA becomes a registered charity in its own right.

2008 - After its AGM, York IA holds a special lunch in celebration of its 40th anniversary. By this time membership had grown to 121.

2009 - York IA website launched. Membership stands at 131.
